Don’t be a “Deer in the headlights!” Data folks!

Career and life advice from a practitioner

I ran into a friend the other day who had just heard some devastating work news. His reaction to his team being in jeopardy was to freeze in place (no, thankfully this was not someone on my teams!). He was waiting for news from his management. Waiting to see what happens next. Unsure, unfocused. Waiting for the crash.

He had that deer in the headlights look… Knowing a crash was coming but unable to act and avoid it.

Don’t let that happen to you!

Sh*t happens. It’s a fact of life. Get over it NOW! If we’re breathing, we can recover, The important thing is to collect our thoughts, prepare to act, and then go after our next goal.

What has happened cannot be undone but how we react to it is in our hands. Let’s not waste this chance of reacting positively.

If we’re about to lose that sale – start thinking about how to save it, and act on it. Think of what we learnt from losing this sale, and how we can be better at winning the next one. We must start creating our next sale in parallel.

If we’re expecting to lose our job – we must get the resume ready, activate the network, talk to them now. If we’re being re-assigned to a new assignment – get to know the new management. Find out if we know enough about the new role. Study. Explore the next role. Remember – use time wisely, today – before it’s gone!

Don’t waste time – because the real danger is to not be prepared for the next stage. Do something – anything (constructive)! If we do not embrace the change that’s coming, and we do not do it fast, more changes will come and we won’t be ready for them. And we won’t get the best opportunities – since others will go after them before we do.

Deer in the headlights get run over. Don’t get run over. Get support, get help, don’t be alone and don’t mull over negative events. #positivity #proactive

The next step is to find out what positive step we must take. Think and convert your thoughts into positive action. We will come out stronger and better.

Good luck!
